Title: The Reptile Room
Author: Lemony Snicket
Series: A Series Of Unfortunate Events
Book #: 2
Publisher: Egmont Books

My Rating:

Dear Reader,

If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale, I'm afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don't be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery.

In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the appearance of a person they'd hoped never to see again.

I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

I really enjoyed this book. As the first one in this series, The Reptile Room, threw me in a loop of emotions because everytime I thought things were going alright, something really bad happened.

For a middle grade book this was really dark, which is good in a way because it's different and let's kids know that bad things do happen aswell.

Something that I really disliked was the fact that NOBODY seemed to listen to what the kids had to say. If they had stopped and just listened for 1 minute, maybe half the drama that took place wouldn't have happened in the first place.

The characters remained the same for the most part, with the adding of the kids' uncle, Monty. I absolutely loved that character and the kids seemed to have needed him at this particular time in their lives.

But again, WHY WON'T ANYONE LISTEN TO THEM. It's incredibly frustrating and it made me enjoy the book a bit less to be honest. Plus, Count Olaf is one persistent motherducker.... Geez.

Have you read this book? What did you think?
